What Can Your Montessori Child Do On Saturday?

MANY YOUNG CHILDREN ARE IN A GROUP ENVIRONMENT ALL WEEK LONG, SO WHEN SATURDAY COMES ALONG IT'S FUN TO HAVE LONG STRETCHES OF TIME FOR UNSTRUCTURED EXPLORING, MONTESSORI-STYLE!

Saturdays might just be the favorite day of the week for most people, especially children. It's often the day that we play!

We Montessori folks know that for the young child, play is their work. Likewise, work is play!

Saturday morning is a great time for the Montessori child to grind the coffee for the grownups! This activity was the all-time favorite of my grandchildren when they would come to visit.

What an amazing large AND fine motor activity...not to mention the Practical Life aspect of care of environment and developing independence.

When my own children were young, they would help make biscuits for our Saturday morning breakfast. Those biscuits always turned out fabulous!

not to mention learning how to cook!

Well, there's always a little cleaning up to do after a baking project. Providing a child-size broom is a delight for the young child. Little ones still LOVE sweeping up!

On Saturday morning, there's more time to tend to the garden. Put a watering can in the hands of a young child and your garden will flourish along with your child!

Late morning on Saturday is a wonderful time for the Montessori child to explore the Arts. Put on some jazzy dance music and the young child will get moving. (maybe you, too!) You can start dancing, or you can bring out a basket of small percussion instruments and rock out!

SENSORIAL
Playing, listening and dancing to music enriches
learning through the senses, and keeps the mind (and body) working

Exploring art mediums develops the aesthetic sense as well as exercising the small muscles of the hand

Keeping art activities organized gives the child a sense of order in the environment, and...just look at this colorful way of enhancing the visual sense!

Even the simplest of containers can make an art experience very appealing, the Montessori way.

Saturdays are often the day for family excursions to the park, forest, or beach, and a picnic lunch offers many opportunities for the Montessori child to develop skills.

Exploring the natural world gives children scientific information (ex: classifying objects in nature) and develops the proprioceptive sense of balance and "groundedness."

develops physical skills, and gives a rich

Saturday afternoons are made for hammocks!
